    University of Arkansas Campus

    $295/person

  • The Wilderness First Aid course is designed for people taking half or full-day trips, those traveling with reliable cell phone coverage, and where outside assistance is typically available within a few hours. WFA courses are an introduction to wilderness expedition medicine, focusing on general concepts and basic treatment skills. Many WFA graduates return to take a longer, more intensive course. The certification also meets American Camping Association and Scouts of America trip leader requirements.

Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

The Wilderness First Aid course may be the best choice for weekend campers, people taking day hikes within cell phone coverage, and those who are just looking for basic instruction. If you like it and want more, you can always come back later and take a longer, more intensive course. Our WFA course meets the Boy Scouts of America and the American Camping Association trip leader requirements.

The standard WFA course is three days long and combines in-person lecture, skill labs, simulations, and case study reviews into a single course.

The two-part hybrid WFA course minimizes the time spent away from home or work by separating the lecture and practical skills of a standard WFA course into two separate parts. Part 1 is taught completely online via dedicated course website while the Part 2 practical session is two days long and focuses on skill labs, simulations, and case study reviews. You must complete both parts within a year to receive certification.

In addition to their WFA certification, graduates will receive a separate Epinephrine certification for the treatment of anaphylaxis. Wilderness Adult & Child CPR and AED certification is available in some courses.

Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

The Wilderness First Responder course is designed for outdoor professionals, those who take multi-day or longer personal trips, those who take part in high risk activities (rock climbing, whitewater paddling, mountaineering, multi-week expeditions of all kinds, etc.), and those who simply want to know more about wilderness medicine. Certification as a Wilderness First Responder is the industry standard for outdoor instructors and guides. We recommend taking the full course—standard or hybrid—every six years.

The standard WFR course is nine days long and combines in-person lecture, skill labs, simulations, and case study reviews into a single course.

The two-part hybrid WFR course minimizes the time spent away from home or work by separating the lecture and practical skills of a standard WFR course into two separate parts. Part 1 is taught completely online via dedicated course website while the Part 2 practical session is five days long focuses on skill labs, simulations, and case study reviews. You must complete both parts within a year to receive certification.

In addition to their WFR certification, graduates will receive separate Anaphylaxis and Wilderness Adult & Child CPR and AED certifications.
